New Windows Server LTSC in Prospect
In a blog post, Microsoft announced a new Windows Server vNext Preview Build 2021, which, in addition to the mandatory listing of new and improved features, also includes a note that this is a new build of the next version of Windows Server Long-Term Servicing (LTSC).
The LTSC versions of Windows 10 and Windows Server are long-term supported versions of Windows that are released only every two to three years. The latest LTSC versions are Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 and Windows Server 2019. Like all LTSC versions, they receive only security updates for 10 years and no feature updates. According to the software company, the LTSC versions of the operating systems should only be used for business-critical applications and are less suitable for general operation. The new version is more likely to be released in 2022 under the name Windows Server LTSC 2022.
The current Server vNext 20201 includes both, the Desktop Experience and Server Core installation options for the Datacenter and Standard Editions. A list of features in the new Windows Server 20201 test build can be found in the Microsoft article.
